MysteryLambayeque.mp3
So what is this? Recorded by Jonas Nilsson. Locality unclear to me: in a "Quebrada San Iceido" or something, probably in Lambayeque, or maybe near Jaen, Cajamarca. Also heard are Pacific Parrotlets, Elegant Crescentchest and White-tipped Dove (probably). |

MysteryJeberosBoaPasto.mp3
Mystery bird in or near the "Boa Pasto" savanna near Jeberos, Loreto, recorded by Jonas Nilsson. Silent intervals of 8 to 20 seconds were removed. Jonas says on the tape "unidentified Tody-Tyrant, maybe Stripe-necked", but I can't find anything on my computer from that species which resembles this. I searched further quite a bit, but can find nothing. I have here nothing of Black Manakin, a common bird there with a "snappy" song, according to Valqui's book (I can't find this sound snappy though). Maybe it's that one?
Paul Coopmans on Yahoo "Birding Peru" forum: "Doesn't sound like Black Manakin".
Identified by Dan Lane on Yahoo "Birding Peru" forum ('Just about the only "triccus" we encountered there, even at the edge of the open "cerrado-like" habitat, was Lophotriccus vitiosus (Double-banded Pygmy-Tyrant - Sjoerd). My recordings from the site are not as high-pitched and musical as this recording, but I suspect there may be enough individual variation to explain the difference.').

And another mystery sound from the Oxapampa 'antenna road", recorded by Jonas Nilsson at 2300 m ad 15h45. Masked Fruiteater? Black-streaked Puffbird?
This was quickly solved by Daniel Lane: it is Maroon-belted Chat-Tyrant Ochthoeca thoracica. |
